St Catherine (interior) and St Stephen (?) (exterior)
Details
The story
Around 1490, a painter working near Brixen could expect churchgoers to recognise a saint by the objects in her hands. On the inner side of this wing, the crown, the sword and the broken wheel with its iron spikes all point to St Catherine of Alexandria. Her legend says the spiked wheel meant to kill her shattered, so she was beheaded with a sword instead. Her hand rests on what is left of it. On the outer side the reading gets harder. A young man with a halo reads from an open book and holds a martyr's palm. He wears a deacon's vestment, the dalmatic, which would fit St Stephen, the first Christian martyr, though the museum puts a question mark after his name.
