The story

You could almost cover this whole painting with one hand. It measures about 19 centimeters square, and into that small space Lemberger put far more forest than saint. The dragon, the armored knight and the kneeling princess are all present, but they shrink beside the trees, which rise in strange elongated shapes and seem to sway as if seen in a dream. This was the manner of the Danube region in Germany around 1520, where painters had begun to treat wild nature as the real subject and an old legend as the excuse to paint it. The knight freeing the princess becomes a small event happening at the edge of a much larger and stranger wood.
