St. Mary's with Houses and Chimney (Bonn)
Details
The story
The foundation stone of this church went into the ground in August 1887, seven months after August Macke was born. St. Marien was designed by Joseph Prill, a Bonn schoolmaster who taught religion and had no training as an architect, and the congregation was using the building by 1892. When Macke painted it in 1911, from the north end of the city where he was then living, the church was almost exactly his own age.
The German title lists what is in the picture in the order it sits there, the church, the houses and the chimney, and gives the chimney the same standing as the tower.
St. Marien is still at the corner of Adolfstraße and Oppenhoffstraße, and has kept the neo-Gothic shape Macke saw.
