Still Life with Copper Vessels
Details
The story
A copper pan lies tipped on its side so that its bright lining faces the room. A smaller copper pot stands upside down in front of it, and at the far left a little jug has fallen over. Beside all this kitchen metal stands a white jar painted with dark leaf patterns. A climbing plant with pale trumpet flowers grows out of it and trails over the front edge of the ledge. Joannes de Cordua, a painter from Brussels who made his career in Vienna, left the canvas undated. He signed it at the lower centre in capitals, I. D. CORDVA, with a V where we would write a U. The Belvedere bought the picture in 1933 from the Viennese dealers Neumann and Salzer, and from March 1934 it was shown in the Baroque Museum in the Lower Belvedere.
