Still Life with Grapes and a Lemon (Chimneypiece), from the Dolls' House of Petronella Dunois
Details
The story
Dutch houses of the 1670s often had a painting built into the panelling of the chimney breast, and this dolls' house has one too. The chimneypiece is a still life in gouache on paper, just under 11 centimetres high, fixed into the woodwork. It shows a bunch of grapes with vine leaves, a roemer, the green Dutch wine glass with knobs on its stem, a bread roll, and a pewter plate holding a lemon whose peel hangs over the table edge in a long spiral. The half-peeled lemon was a favourite motif of Dutch still-life painters of the time. The Rijksmuseum dates it, like the house itself, to about 1676.
