Stories of Joseph: The Search for the Stolen Cup
Details
The story
Joseph, now governor of Egypt, sent his brothers home with their grain and laid a trap. His steward hid each man's money in the mouth of his sack, and Joseph's own silver cup in the youngest brother's load. Then the steward caught up with them and accused them of theft, and they swore that whoever had the cup should die. In Genesis the search runs from the eldest down to Benjamin, the youngest, and this little panel, barely 34 centimetres tall, shows it under way. A bearded man in red and green plunges his hand into a sack, while beside him another holds out a dark purse full of coins, money they believed they had paid. A boy in blue, most likely Benjamin, sits on the ground in front. Further back, outside a house with a sign on its wall, men sit at a bench and a laden donkey grazes.
