The angel appears to Hagar in the desert / Hagar and Ismael in the Desert of Bersheeba
Details
The story
Sarah, jealous for her own son Isaac, had Abraham send away his second wife, the servant Hagar, together with their son Ishmael. In the desert of Beersheba the water ran out, and Hagar laid the boy down under a bush so that she would not have to watch him die. Then an angel called to her, and she saw a well. Veronese painted the rescue in 1585. The picture belongs to a series catalogued as Veronese and workshop, but the museum singles this one out for its orange and green colouring and the atmosphere of its desert landscape, and considers it largely the work of his own hand. He was 57 then, three years before his death in 1588.
