The story

De Lelie signed this panel with two years, 1794 and 1795, and in between the old Dutch Republic fell. In January 1795 French troops and Dutch revolutionaries took power, and Stadtholder William V fled to England. The museum's description lists among Jan Gildemeester's guests C.R.T. Krayenhoff, the Patriot officer who on 18 January told Amsterdam's burgomasters to resign. The room itself looks untroubled. The merchant had turned two large rooms of his house on the Herengracht into a picture gallery in 1792, and he stands in the middle, talking with a visitor in a red coat who raises his spectacles. Gilded frames cover the walls up to the ceiling, and a Rembrandt portrait of an old man hangs above the host's head. The painter included himself too, kneeling in the right foreground.
