The Assumption of the Virgin
Details
The story
Around 1622 and 1623 Pasquale Ottino painted the Assumption of the Virgin at least twice. One version went to the canons of Santa Maria in Vanzo in Padua. This one, dated 1623 by the museum, comes from Santa Elisabetta, a church in Verona. It is a full altarpiece with an arched top, more than two and a half metres tall, with the apostles gathered at the empty tomb while the Virgin is carried up to heaven.
Ottino was about 45 by then. Even so, the museum finds in the play of light and shadow, and in the colour, the Mannerist manner he had learned as a young man in Verona. The canvas came to the museum in 1997, a bequest from Giorgio Sirena.
