The Cascades at Tivoli, with a Storm Approaching
Details
The story
Travellers climb a road on the hill facing the cascatelle, the smaller falls at Tivoli, while dark clouds gather over the valley. The falls were already a regular excursion for visitors to Rome, and Teerlink put that traffic into the picture, riders on horses and mules and peasants on foot. The man on the white horse is a painter. The guide walking at the head of the group carries his portfolio of sketches, and the Rijksmuseum suggests the rider may be Teerlink himself. Landscape painters in Rome at the time made their studies in the open air and worked them up into finished canvases in the studio. Teerlink signed this one, like its pendant, Teerlink F. Romae 1824, made by Teerlink in Rome.
