The story

Who painted this small panel has been answered in two ways. Richard Offner, the American scholar who spent decades cataloguing Florentine painting of the 14th century, listed it in 1934 among the works of Bernardo Daddi's followers. The Galleria Sabauda gives it to Daddi himself, and dates it only to the 1330s, without fixing a year.

The panel is about 43 centimetres high, the surviving centre of a small portable altarpiece. Christ sets the crown on his mother's head, in front of a crowd of saints and angels, under a pointed Gothic gable.
