The story

Dou kept coming back to the same experiment, how one small flame behaves in a dark room. Here a group of children works late at their lessons, and every scrap of light in the picture comes from a single candle, most of it hidden behind a hand or a page so you feel the glow more than you see the source. The faces closest to it are warm and sharp, while the corners of the room sink into brown shadow. He painted a school at night more than once, in Leiden, a university town where teaching and study were part of daily life. It was the candlelit scene that made his reputation across Europe, prized because almost no one could render a flame this convincingly. Look at the sheet of paper held up near the candle and you can see how the light passes through it.
