The story

This is a small piece of ordinary street life in the Dutch Republic, painted around 1650. An old woman runs a food stall on a village street, with everything she needs around her, a basket of fruit, a pot of soup, a barrel of wine, and the pan of hot oil for the pancakes she sells to passers-by. Two girls on their way home from school are her customers. The elder is counting coins into the woman's hand while the younger has already started eating, and behind them a man carries in more to sell. Dutch painters of this generation made a specialty of scenes like this, ordinary people caught mid-gesture with no moral attached, the kind of picture a comfortable household would hang for pleasure. The detail worth finding is small, the coins passing between the girl's fingers and the old woman's palm, the single moment of the exchange the whole scene is built around.
