The story

Thomas Lawrence painted the Prince Regent at full length and larger than life, in the robes of the Order of the Garter, standing beside a table with a crown on it. The version signed and dated 1816 hangs in the Vatican Pinacoteca, probably given to Pope Pius VII after the prince became king in 1820. According to the Vatican, the table was a present from Louis XVIII, the French king restored after Napoleon's fall, and the paper on it is a letter from the pope himself. The composition was repeated in several versions.

This copy shrinks all of it to a canvas about 31 centimetres high. Who painted it is unknown, and the museum dates it only to after 1818. It came to Boston in 1907 as a gift from Edward Waldo Forbes, a collector from Cambridge, Massachusetts, who two years later became director of Harvard's Fogg Art Museum.
