The Prisoner

The story
The National Gallery dates this small canvas to about 1909 and records little else about it: oil on canvas, 61 by 38 centimetres, upright and narrow.
The Greek title is masculine, o fylakismenos, the man who has been shut up, and he is the harder of the two figures to find. The barred window takes up the picture. A woman stands at it from the outside, and of the prisoner himself there is a face behind the grille.
