The Shore of Deauville

The story
By 1896 Boudin was 72, wintering in the south of France for his health and coming back to the Normandy coast when the weather allowed. He painted this one on the spot and said so in the signature at the lower right, 96, E Boudin, Deauville. The following spring it travelled to Paris for the Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, the newer of the city's two big annual exhibitions.
The canvas is wide and low, 90 centimetres across, with a jetty, a lighthouse and boats under sail out on the water. The paint in these last years sits thicker on the weave than it did in his younger work.
In the summer of 1898 Boudin came back to Deauville for good and died there on 8 August. This picture reached the museum in Lille in 1911, part of a private collection given to the city.
