The Triumph of Diana (Winter)
Details
The story
In the last of Albani's four seasons, winter, the cupids have finally fallen asleep. They lie curled on cushions in the foreground while the nymphs of Diana, goddess of hunting and of chastity, quietly take away their weapons. One kneels beside a sleeping cupid and slips the bow from his hand. Another walks off with a bow of her own, and at the far left a third holds a golden quiver up out of reach.
Further back, a nymph pulls a small shield marked with a red heart down from a tree. In the Summer tondo, the cupids use that heart as their target. The Galleria Borghese reads the whole scene as the victory of chastity over the beauty of Venus. Diana herself looks on from the dark clouds above, a crescent moon on her head.
