The Virgin with the Basket
Details
The story
This is the Virgin and Child, but Vouet painted it around 1625 as something close to a scene from an ordinary home. He was working in Italy then, and you can feel what he had taken from the painters around him in Rome: deep shadows and a strong, natural light falling across skin and cloth. The mother and child are close and unposed, more like a real household than a heavenly court. And there, giving the painting its name, is a plain sewing basket set nearby, the kind of everyday workbasket that turns the holy family into a family you might actually meet.
