The Wall of the Kitchen Garden, Yerres
Details
The story
In 1877 Caillebotte took charge of the third Impressionist exhibition, found the rooms on the rue Le Peletier, paid for much of it and hung his own Paris Street, Rainy Day where nobody could miss it. That same year, out at Yerres, about 20 kilometres southeast of the city, he was painting the wall of the family kitchen garden. His father had bought the property in 1860 and enlarged the vegetable plots, and Gustave painted the grounds more than 80 times over those years, the river, the greenhouse, the gardeners at work. He lost the place in 1879, when the estate was sold after his mother's death. The house and its garden belong to the town of Yerres now, and you can walk through the potager he was looking at.
