Tiger in the Jungle
Details
The story
For years before this, Marc paid his bills by teaching animal anatomy to other artists in Munich. That training is still doing its work here. The tiger is correct as a body, the shoulder loaded, the head turned back, while the jungle around it has come apart into coloured planes and yellow shafts. He had reason to be thinking in planes in 1912. That October he and August Macke, a fellow painter and close friend, called on Robert Delaunay in Paris and saw his Windows, pictures in which light is broken into overlapping facets, and both of them went home and used it. The whole thing is gouache and pencil on paper, roughly ten by 17 centimetres, small enough to sit in one hand.
