Untitled Improvisation I
Details
The story
By 1914 Kandinsky's numbered Improvisations had reached 35. That year a smaller run appeared beside them, pictures now known as Untitled Improvisations, and this is the first of them, painted in oil tempera on cardboard, 65 by 50 centimetres. The Lenbachhaus also keeps two small drafts on light brown paper, in pencil and ink, for numbers four and five. Number three, on a board of the same size, belonged to Gabriele Münter and then to the painter Hans Hofmann, who ran his own art school in Munich. He took it with him when he emigrated to the United States in 1932, and it now hangs in Los Angeles.
