Votive Panel with St Anne, the Virgin and Child and Sts Leopold, Ulrich and Andrew
Details
The story
In January 1485 Pope Innocent VIII declared Leopold a saint. He was a margrave of Austria who had died in 1136, and his canonisation came at the urging of the Habsburg emperor Frederick III. This small votive panel was painted 23 years later, in 1508, and it came from the Cistercian abbey of Neukloster in Wiener Neustadt.
Leopold stands at the front of the group in an ermine-trimmed prince's hat, holding a model of a church. Beside him a bishop in a green chasuble carries a crozier and a fish, the sign of Ulrich of Augsburg. The donor kneels before them above a coat of arms. Across the tiled floor the Virgin holds the naked Christ Child, with her mother Anne seated close by, and between the two groups stands an empty folding chair with a red cushion.
