The story

Dahl painted this in 1827 from Dresden, in Germany, where he had settled, but it grew out of a journey home. The year before, he had traveled through southern Norway for the first time as a mature artist, over the mountains to the western fjords, sketching as he went. Back in his studio he worked those drawings up into this view across the Sognefjord, and he sharpened it, making the peaks steeper and setting a single tall rock upright in the foreground like a standing stone. The snow carries a weight of quiet and of the past, while a thread of morning sun catches the top of that rock. It is a Norwegian painter, working abroad, composing an image of his own country's landscape as something proud and monumental.
