The story

In the mid 1870s Argenteuil, a river town a short train ride down the Seine from Paris, had several painters working in it at once. Monet had rented a house there, Manet came out from the city, and Renoir came to paint beside them, more than once setting his easel at the same spot as Monet and finishing an entirely different picture. The woman under the parasol is most probably Camille Monet, Claude's wife, who sat for Renoir several times between 1874 and 1876. Watch what happens to her dress. It reads as white until the shade crosses it, and there it turns pink and blue. The child behind her has lost interest already and is toddling off uphill and out of the picture, put down in a handful of strokes.
