The story

A young woman stands at an arched stone window holding a bunch of grapes, and the year 1662 is written in a medallion at the top centre of the panel. The Galleria Sabauda's catalogue puts the word attributed before Gerrit Dou's name, while the museum's own visitor guide names him without any qualification. The picture sits, for now, on the line between his hand and his circle.

The idea itself was in demand. The British Royal Collection has another girl with grapes at a window, which it gives to Dou and dates to around 1660, bought by George IV in 1814 with a group of 86 Dutch and Flemish paintings. Later followers copied the Turin composition too, and one such copy, described as derived from this panel, has been sold at Bonhams in London.
