The story
Karl Schmidt-Rottluff added the name of his home village to his own. Rottluff, where he was born in 1884, is now part of Chemnitz, and the city's art museum holds more than 50 of his paintings and almost 300 of his works on paper. The collection also has his friends from the Brücke group of Expressionists, Erich Heckel and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, along with Edvard Munch, whose double portrait of the Berlin collector Hugo Perls and his wife Käte dates from 1913.
The collection lives in the König-Albert-Museum on Theaterplatz, a building by the architect Richard Möbius that opened in 1909. Its modern holdings lost heavily in the Nazi years, when more than 75 works were confiscated, destroyed or sold.
The older galleries reach back to the Romantics around Dresden. Caspar David Friedrich is here with a Sailing Ship from around 1815, and so is his friend Carl Gustav Carus, the Dresden physician who also painted, with a View of Dresden at Sunset.
