The story

For most of its life the cantonal art museum of Vaud shared the Palais de Rumine, a grand 19th-century pile in central Lausanne, with a jumble of other collections. In 2019 it moved out and into a long brick building of its own beside the railway tracks, designed by the Barcelona architects Barozzi Veiga, with a big arched window that reuses the shape of an old locomotive hall that once stood on the site.

That building anchors Plateforme 10, a new arts quarter next to Lausanne station where a design museum and a photography museum joined it in 2022. The collection runs from the late 1700s to now and is especially strong on artists connected to the region around Lake Geneva. After decades of sharing, it finally has close to three times the display space it had before, and hangs its own holdings rather than borrowing room from others.
