Fundación Banco Santander

Madrid, Spain

The story

The Fundación Banco Santander looks after the art collection of one of the world's big banks, and unlike most corporate holdings kept behind office doors, this one has a public gallery. The Santander Art Gallery sits inside the bank's sprawling headquarters campus at Boadilla del Monte, on the western edge of Madrid, and opened in 2006.

The collection runs past a thousand works, from Spanish painting of the late Middle Ages onward, with El Greco, Zurbarán and Sorolla among the older names and Picasso, Miró and Barceló among the modern ones. The foundation lends widely to other museums and each year brings in an important private contemporary collection to show. So a visitor finds a working bank that doubles, in one wing, as a serious picture gallery.
