The story
On the first floor of Palazzo Pianetti runs a gallery more than 70 metres long, its walls and ceiling worked in Rococo stucco. The Pianetti, a noble family of Jesi, built the palace from 1730, and the decoration turns the room into a calendar of the world, with the months, the seasons, the signs of the zodiac, the continents and the liberal arts. Six smaller rooms alongside are painted with stories of Aeneas.
Today the palace houses the town's civic museums, and since 1981 it has held the Pinacoteca, Jesi's picture gallery. Its core is a group of paintings by Lorenzo Lotto, the wandering Venetian painter who worked for churches in Jesi between 1512 and the 1530s. Here are his Deposition, an Annunciation, the Madonna of the Roses, the Visitation and the Saint Lucy altarpiece of 1532, in which the young Sicilian martyr stands firm before her Roman judge.
