The story
For a university gallery, Princeton's holds a startlingly deep collection, close to 100,000 objects that began as teaching material for art-history students in the 1880s and grew into a genuine encyclopedic museum, strong in Chinese painting, ancient Mediterranean and pre-Columbian art, and with a Monet and a Van Gogh among the Europeans.
In 2025 it reopened in an entirely new building by the architect David Adjaye, a set of interlocking pavilions that let visitors cut through the museum as a covered path across campus.
Admission is free, as it has always been.
