The story

Some 50 prints by Rembrandt are kept at Vejle Museum of Art, in a town at the head of a fjord in eastern Jutland, Denmark. They come from the gift that founded it. In 1899 a local councillor, Christian Eckardt, gave the town his collection of old European prints, made between the 1470s and the late 1800s and including sheets by Albrecht Dürer, along with about 2,000 drawings by Danish artists of his own time. That gift still shapes the museum, which holds one of the largest collections of prints in Denmark.

The museum fills the town's former museum building of 1923 and its old library of 1934, linked in 2006 by a new wing designed by the Danish architect Kim Utzon. Among its paintings is Midsummer Night near Vejle Fjord, painted in 1904 by Harald Slott-Møller. The woman seated in a red cape, looking out over the fjord on Midsummer night, is his wife, the painter Agnes Slott-Møller.
