La historia

Saint Marina stands in this group for a particular reason. In June 1509 imperial troops took Padua from Venice, and on 17 July Andrea Gritti marched over from Treviso and took the city back. 17 July was Marina's feast day. In 1512 the Senate made her a patron of the Republic and ordered the doge to hear mass in her church in person every year on that date. Gritti was elected doge himself in 1523, and had himself painted kneeling, presented by Saint Mark to the Virgin, with Marina among the saints standing by. Titian painted that composition for the palace in 1531. It burned in the fire of 1574, and Tintoretto's workshop supplied the replacement.
