La historia
In the early 1870s Cezanne moved out of Paris to Auvers-sur-Oise, a village strung along one road on the north bank of the river, and worked in the open air next to Camille Pissarro, who was nine years older and had been painting that valley for years. He carried his canvas up the slope above the houses and painted straight down onto roofs, garden walls and kitchen plots, with the horizon pushed near the top edge. Doctor Paul Gachet lived in the village and was one of the few people then buying his work. Sixteen years later the same doctor took in Vincent van Gogh, who climbed the same hillside and painted the same roofs.
