La historia

Kandinsky spent his summers before the war at Murnau, a market town in Upper Bavaria south of Munich, in a house Gabriele Munter had bought there in 1909. He painted the country around it for years, and the Hermitage still calls this one Landscape, Dunaberg near Murnau, after the spot outside the town. By 1913 the place had almost gone out of the picture. His preparatory sheets show him working out a collision of two diagonals and letting the rest of the landscape fall away around it. The canvas reached Saint Petersburg late. In 1948 the Moscow museum that held it, the State Museum of New Western Art, was closed by government decree during the campaign against formalism in the arts, and its collection was split between the Hermitage and the Pushkin Museum.
