La storia

Berlin around 1818 was settling into a quiet, orderly peace after the Napoleonic wars, and that is exactly the mood Johann Erdmann Hummel caught here: a chess game in the garden salon of the Palais Voss, watched by a ring of well-dressed guests. Hummel taught perspective and optics at the academy, and colleagues nicknamed him for it. Look at how precisely he tracks the light, the reflections in the polished floor, the fall of the shadows, the geometry of the tiled room, all worked out like a problem. The men around the board were real Berliners he knew, several of them recognisable portraits. That cool, measured clarity would strike later viewers as almost photographic, decades before photography existed.
