Cardinal Joseph Fesch was Napoleon's uncle, and he used his nephew's rise, and the upheavals of the age, to assemble one of the largest private painting collections ever known, said to number some 16,000 pictures at his death. He left a thousand of the best to his birthplace, the Corsican town of Ajaccio.
The result is the finest collection of Italian painting in France outside the Louvre. In a palace built for the purpose hang panels by Botticelli and Giovanni Bellini, the strange faces of Cosmè Tura, and later work reaching to Titian and the Italian baroque, room after room of it.
A separate wing keeps the Napoleonic side of the story, portraits and relics of the family that made Ajaccio famous, in the town where the emperor was born.
