이야기

The Musée Grobet-Labadié is a wealthy Marseille family's house, kept much as they lived in it. Marie Grobet, born Labadié, and her husband, the painter and musician Louis Grobet, spent decades travelling Europe and buying, and by the time she gave the mansion and everything in it to the city in 1919 it held some 7,000 objects.

There is no single masterpiece to line up for. The pleasure is the whole: rooms of 18th-century furniture, Flemish and French tapestries, faience and porcelain, old musical instruments, medieval ivories and paintings, crowded together with the eclectic taste of a merchant family that liked to be surrounded by beautiful things.

It opened to the public in the 1920s and still feels less like a gallery than a home you have been let into.
