A história
Around 1900, in his apartment at Strandgade 30 in old Copenhagen, Vilhelm Hammershøi painted a room with almost nothing in it. No people, no story, no furniture to speak of. Just sunlight falling through a window onto a bare floor and wall, and in that light, the faint drift of dust hanging in the air. He usually posed his wife with her back to us in these grey interiors. Here he removed even her, and let the light itself be the subject. The title names the one thing actually moving in the picture. Hammershøi painted the same few rooms of this flat again and again, in the muted greys he preferred to any brighter colour.
