A história

This sober portrait is traditionally said to show Camilo Goya, the painter's younger brother, though the sitter's identity is not certain. Camilo took holy orders and served as chaplain at Chinchón, a town near Madrid, close enough that Francisco could visit him often over the years. The plain dark clothing and the precise, unshowy modelling match the portraits Goya made of his enlightened friends in the 1780s, which is why the picture is usually placed in that decade — though some scholars have argued for a date as late as 1800. It later passed to another Spanish painter, Ignacio Zuloaga, who collected Goya above all others.
