By 1908 Sargent was the most sought-after portrait painter in the English-speaking world and thoroughly tired of it, escaping most summers to the mountains to paint whatever he pleased. This grew out of sketches he made in the Valle d'Aosta, in the Italian Alps. A near-naked man crouches among rocks and trees in broken sunlight, worked so far into the dappled shade that you can miss him at first, with two deer beside him that Sargent assembled from a stuffed specimen. When the Met settled on the English title, he wrote to its director that he wished for a word carrying no Christian association, something that suggested quietness and pantheism.
