Die Geschichte

In 1922 Kandinsky arrived at the Bauhaus in Weimar, having left Moscow and the aftermath of the Russian Revolution behind him. Almost at once he made a portfolio he called Kleine Welten, or Small Worlds, 12 prints pulled in three techniques, woodcut, etching and lithography, this being the second. He thought of each sheet as a complete little cosmos, its own self-contained world of floating shapes, arcs and scattered marks, none of them standing for anything you could name. Come to a school built around craft and workshops, he was working the presses himself and letting each method shape the image. The whole set was published that same year in an edition of 230.
