Die Geschichte

Morisot married Eugene Manet, the painter's younger brother, at the end of 1874, and the two of them spent the following summer in England. Most of it went on the Isle of Wight, where she painted the yachting crowd at Cowes. The London part of the trip produced this one canvas. She spent time in front of the Turners at the National Gallery while she was there, and it shows in the way the weather and the smoke are handled here. The single hard accent is the red funnel of a modern steamship. She laid the oil on so thinly that the picture behaves more like a watercolour.
