The story

Jean-Baptiste Greuze had another painter in his own house. His daughter Anna-Geneviève, born in 1762, trained with him and worked at his side until his death, and she shared so much of his technique that scholars now think a good deal of what she painted in those years has been taken for his. While he lay dying she even made a replica of his last self-portrait.

That is part of what lies behind the label attributed to. It means the museum's specialists believe the picture is probably by Greuze himself, judging by its handling and its history, while no signature or document proves it. The label claims more than workshop of, which would give the picture to his assistants, and more than follower of, which means another painter working in his manner.
