Circle of Giovanni Badile
Republic of Venice · International Gothic, Veronese school
The story
Circle of Giovanni Badile is the label a museum uses for a painting that looks very much like the work of Giovanni Badile, the Veronese painter, but that it does not believe he painted himself. The word circle is deliberately loose. The painter may have trained with Badile, worked beside him, or simply learned from his pictures in the same city, and the documents no longer allow anyone to say which.
In Verona early in the 15th century many painters shared the same ornate Gothic language of gold, bright colour and graceful saints, and their hands can come very close. A work in this group is judged by comparison with the paintings known to be Badile's, while the name of its real author is still missing.
