Giovanni Badile

The story
In 1421 the commune of Verona chose Giovanni Badile as its expert to put a value on a fresco, a sign of the standing he had in his own city. He was born in Verona around 1379, into a family of painters who would go on working there until the end of the 16th century, and his son Antonio is now usually identified with the master of a busy Veronese workshop later in the 1400s.
The one work documented as his is the fresco decoration of the Guantieri chapel in the church of Santa Maria della Scala, recorded in 1443, with stories of Saint Jerome and of Filippo Benizi, a saint of the Servite friars who ran the church. In the splays of the windows he painted, much enlarged, four portrait medals by Pisanello, the painter and medallist who dominated Verona's art in those years. Badile made his will in 1448 and was dead before 1451.
