Constantin Pascali

Pascali was born in 1860 at Turnu Magurele, a Danube port in southern Romania, into a Greek family, and Greek scholarship knows him under the name Constantinos Paschalopoulos. He trained twice over abroad, first in Munich in the private studio of Ludwig von Loefftz, then in Paris at the Academie Julian around 1889 to 1891, and came back to teach at the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest through the 1890s.

In 1897 he joined Ileana, the first independent exhibiting society in Romania, formed by painters who wanted a room of their own away from the official Salon. The other members were Stefan Luchian, Nicolae Vermont and Constantin Artachino, and their names have carried a great deal further than his. Romanian sources put his death in 1924, though the standard French dictionary of artists gives 1929. His portrait of a fellow painter, Simonidy, is dated 1890, from his Paris years.
