Copy after Jacopo Tintoretto
The story
Tintoretto's canvases in the churches and confraternities of Venice were copied for centuries, by young painters training their hands and for collectors who could never own the originals. Copy after Jacopo Tintoretto is the label for a repetition of one of his known compositions by another hand, usually unrecorded and often much later.
In Munich, the Alte Pinakothek has a copy of his composition of Christ in the house of Simon the Pharisee, the meal at which a woman washed Christ's feet with her tears. In Boston, the Museum of Fine Arts has a reduced copy of the Assumption of the Virgin that Tintoretto painted in the 1550s for a Venetian church, the altarpiece that hangs today in the church of the Gesuiti. The Boston canvas is less than 70 centimetres high, and it entered the museum in 1884.
