Dobromir
Principality of Wallachia · Post-Byzantine art
The story
Almost everything known about Dobromir comes from painted inscriptions. One places him at the Dealu monastery near Târgoviște, then the capital of Wallachia, where the church was painted in 1514 by Dobromir together with local masters named Jitian and Stanciu. Another, dated 1526, is in the monastery church of Curtea de Argeș, the grand foundation of Prince Neagoe Basarab. It names Dobromir of Târgoviște as the painter and explains that wars with the Ottomans had delayed the work, which was finished under Neagoe's successor, Radu of Afumați.
His years of birth and death are not recorded. In 1882, during a restoration led by the French architect André Lecomte du Noüy, the Argeș murals were removed and the church repainted. Only 35 fragments survive, less than a tenth of the original surface, and 29 of them are now in the National Museum of Art of Romania, among them votive portraits of Neagoe's family.
