Imitator of Charles-François Daubigny
The story
Charles-François Daubigny, the French painter of river landscapes, had pupils and admirers who painted the banks of the Oise much as he did. One of them was Hippolyte Camille Delpy, who had studied with him and with the older landscapist Corot, and who signed his pictures with his own name. A picture in Daubigny's manner by a painter who can no longer be named is labelled follower of Daubigny.
Imitator of is a different label. It covers a picture made by someone outside his studio and his circle, usually after his death in 1878, in a manner meant to pass for his own, sometimes with his signature added. Of all the labels that still carry his name, it places the painting furthest from his hand.
Sorting his own paintings from the rest has relied since 1976 on the catalogue of his work compiled by Robert Hellebranth and published in Switzerland, with a supplement added in 1996.
