Jacopo Bassano

Jacopo Bassano spent almost his whole life not in Venice but in the small mainland town of Bassano, whose name he took, running a busy family workshop with his four painter sons. From that distance he built a distinctive line in Venetian painting.

He turned Bible stories into scenes of country life. His Adoration becomes an excuse to paint cattle, sheep, dogs, copper pots, and weathered farmhands, all rendered with earthy, tactile realism. Later he grew fascinated by night, lighting nocturnal scenes with lanterns and firelight in a way few painters had attempted.

His animals and rustic detail made his pictures hugely popular and much copied, partly by his own sons, which makes sorting out who painted what a lasting headache for scholars. Two of those sons, Francesco and Leandro, carried the workshop and the family name into Venice itself.
